5 Ways to Protect Your Business and Home Technology
From software solutions to cybersecurity, these simple habits go a long way toward keeping your systems secure and running smoothly.
- 01.
Turn on multi-factor authentication
Add a second step, like a code from an authenticator app, to your email, banking, and Microsoft 365 or Google accounts. Even if a password is stolen, MFA stops most account takeovers. Start with email, since it's the key to resetting everything else.
- 02.
Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule
Keep three copies of important data, on two different types of storage, with one copy offsite or in the cloud. Test a restore every few months. A backup you've never restored from is only a guess.
- 03.
Install updates promptly
Most attacks use security holes that already have a fix. Turn on automatic updates for Windows, macOS, your browser, and your apps, and restart when prompted. Don't forget routers, printers, and other devices on your network.
- 04.
Use a password manager
Reusing one password means one breach can unlock all your accounts. A password manager creates and remembers a strong, unique password for every site, so you only need to remember one.
- 05.
Pause before you click
Phishing emails and texts often look like they come from your bank, a delivery service, or your boss, and push you to act fast. Check the sender's address, hover over links before clicking, and confirm unusual requests, especially for money or passwords, by calling a number you already know.
